Orbx Trees HD?

Hello Everyone,

Anyone out there try Orbx Trees HD?

I noticed a significant increase in performance with Orbx Trees.   Unfortunately the disclaimer is that
I also updated my Active Sky Next at the same time.  But I can now, comfortably fly the NGX and use VoxATC 6
together at top payware airports.  Before the changes the performance was not to my liking.

Obviously we don't use the NGX here.  I mention it as a bench mark.  Still it would be great  to know if anyone
else as noticed an increase in performance with ORBX Trees HD.

A friend of mine has them and sent me some comparison screenshots, can't say it looks all that much better to my eyes but the performance benefits alone would justify a purchase. ORBX claim a 20% improvement but don't state what settings that applies to, he told me this:
QuoteWhat I decided to do was a very simple test. In each location I took a screenshot and saved the flight, I did a full 360' circle to see if I got stutters etc. On default textures pre-install I noted stutters and a little bit of lag in most areas I took the screenshots. Nothing to have me pooping my pants in frustration, but it was noticeable given the texture load and scenery draw calls as you rotate around. When I did the same thing with the HD textures it was noticeably smoother. So I would have to agree that yes, I got an improvement in FPS, if its 20% I can't say.

Chris,

I did notice a difference in the look of the trees.   It is very subtle though.
First thing you may notice is subtle shades in the tops of the trees.   Last night when climbing out of EGLC heading north, I felt the trees looked a little more realistic!

Orbx claims a reduction in VAS usage.  Everyone's system can be set up differently.
But at this point I am tickled pink because I can now fly the NGX with VOXATC (automated atc) ,
15 percent traffic, and there is no real hint of stutters.

You have to appreciate OrBx!  They really do make great product not tom mention all the freeware they have!

I installed them, and they trashed my P3D. After installed them I had stutters and CTD's worse than the old FS9 days. After playing around for hours, posting for solutions here and there, I finally found a way to uninstall them, which was hidden, and now my P3D is back to normal... For awhile I thought I was going to have to reinstall P3D. I will never buy a product from that company again.

Removing FTX ORBX products can be difficult, as many change core FSX files but don't come with a proper uninstaller. Fortunately their products are generally good quality, but be wary of sub-contracted products (e.g. Orbx England and Wales were developed by Sim720 and imo are not up to the standard of FTX's USA products). Be wary of Orbx airports too, as some don't play nicely with the Majestic Q400 because they don't represent the ground in the normal manner so it sinks through the terrain!

I didn't think you'd see much performance improvement in P3D with Trees HD, but I am surprised it made things worse, it's made me think twice about buying the product. Intercity only has a few P3D users I know of apart from yourself Bob (I know Ben made the switch recently), so I'm watching with interest to see if/when I should make the leap to P3D myself.

I bought my first MSFS in the mid 80's and flew them up until FSX, and then I stopped for about 5 years. Got tired of CTDs. stutters, and all the rest of the problems that would crop up no matter what. I bought P3D about 6 weeks ago after trying it at a friends house, and it is the best Flight Sim experience I have ever had. The only time the program has malfunction is when I installed the Orbx trees. It is stable, smooth, stutter free, and looks great.

Have generally been very pleased with P3D. Very slick and smooth. Almost ironed out the few compatibility issues especially with Uk2000 airports and FTX. Was considering the trees addon but might give it a miss for now if it has given you grief  Bob. The Q400 runs like a beauty so all in all a good switch.

Update.  I reinstalled the trees. after backing up all the files in P3D in case I ran into another problem, and this time it works perfectly. I used the same installer, so I guess it was just one of those computer glitches the first time. The trees look pretty good....

Computers, Windows, Flight Simulators, they're all cruel and unpredictable mistresses in my experience! Thanks for the update Bob, did you notice any performance improvement with them (smoother or outright framerates) or just better visuals?

No performance boost that I can see, but the trees do look good and there is no lowering of FPS,so I am happy with it. Just got soft clouds too, which are on sale this week for $5 and look great.
